I understand that the thought of photos with toddlers can be scary. Toddlers can be unpredictable and have big emotions at the drop of a dime but learning how to prep your toddler for your photography session can potentially make a huge difference! Here are a few tips on how to prep your toddler for your photo session from an Atlanta Family Photographer.
Before your session:
Ensure your toddler is well rested! This is probably the most important tip. I photograph either very early in the morning or a few hours before sunset in the evening when the light is the best. I suggest choosing a shoot time when you know your child will be in the best mood. If you can’t swing a morning session, I would recommend making sure nap time is prioritized that day.
During your session:
Remember that expectations may not match reality. And snacks. When I think about how to prep your toddler for your photography session, I understand children can be unpredictable. You can take all the right measures to try to ensure a smooth session but sometimes kids just aren’t having it. And that’s ok! Your child may not want anything to do with being in photos. If that’s the case, we will likely prioritize playing games where interaction can be photographed naturally. Another important thing to remember for natural photos is don’t worry about trying to get kids to look at the camera. We really only need a few of everyone looking at the camera. Focus on interacting with your family – tickle, give kisses and snuggles, sing songs, play follow the leader, go on a hunt for magic wishing weeds, etc. I always tells parents to keep smiling no matter what happens. I
I don’t prefer bribing children because they often become hyper focused on the reward and don’t understand why we aren’t done after smiling for one photo. Making sure everyone has a light meal before your session (including Dad) can work wonders. I would avoid a big meal full of carbs because that could make people tired. But taking a break for a snack when a toddler is cranky can sometimes do the trick. White puffs or small marshmallows are great options. I would steer clear from chocolate that can melt or anything that could turn their mouth red, blue, or purple. I hope these tips on how to prep your toddler for your photo session are helpful!
