I absolutely adored planning this in home newborn session for my sweet friends. Watching this sweet lady become a momma of two boys is such an honor. Their Fall family photos right before Logan arrived were so much fun. Here are a few things on what to expect for your in home newborn session if you book one with Michelle Blanco Photography.

Time Frame

Typically I like to plan newborn sessions within 14 days of birth to ensure babies are still in their sleepy newborn phase but it’s not unusual to push this timeframe up to one month after birth though, especially for Mamas who have had c-sections or need a little more time to feel more like themselves. Moms and Dads are usually starting to get in a routine in those first two weeks although they still might be sleep deprived.

What to Expect on the day of Your Newborn Session

On the day of your session one of my trusted hair and makeup artists will come to your home making you looks like a slightly glammed up version of yourself. I will bring the dresses mama selected from my client wardrobe. I will also bring a selection of newborn bows for girls and neutral swaddles. I do prefer to use swaddles from my collection because, after years of working with little ones, I know the fabric types and sizes that will work best for swaddling for the purposes of a newborn photography session.

Including Special Items in Your Session

Please let me know if you have any special items like blankets, a bassinet, or outfits that you’d like to use in your pre-session questionnaire. I love incorporating pieces that make your session unique to your family.

Preparing Baby

Please feed the baby 30 minutes before your session is scheduled to start. We want a full, happy, sleepy baby for the session. As you can imagine, this will likely throw your little one a bit off schedule (if you have one) for the day. It’s also very possible that baby will need a feeding during the session too which is absolutely normal. This may throw off their schedule a little bit but I promise they usually get right back on track the next day.

Once I arrive at your home, we will get baby changed into an outfit that shows off his or her hands and feet to ensure I can take those precious detail photos.

I always start newborn sessions with solo baby photos, so Mama and siblings have plenty of time to try on dresses and finish getting ready without feeling rushed.

Locations in Your Home

If you’re planning an in-home newborn session, we will use the nursery (if it’s ready), your living space, and/or a bedroom with the best light and neutral bedding when possible. I don’t want you to think your house has to be spotless because it doesn’t. I will choose the room with the best light and we can move a few things out of the way and we will be good to go.

I love seeing how each individual nursery is designed. You can see so much time and love goes into them. Sweet Logan moved into big brother’s nursery and Liam moved into his first big boy room. I love that Mom and Dad made a few changes to the decor to make this space special for Logan.

After Your Newborn Session

I know how hard those first few weeks and months are with a new baby, so I always try to make this experience as easy as possible for Mamas. After your session we will schedule a reveal call where you will see your images for the first time. Since we’ve already discussed your artwork options during your session planning call, we will build the artwork that you’ve decided will serve your family the best. Whether it’s a gallery wall or a gorgeous velvet album of your favorite images, the final product will be delivered within 8 weeks of your session. I hope this post on what to expect during your in home newborn session was helpful!
